City West Commercials’ Mercedes-Benz star rises in Exeter
Mercedes-Benz Trucks Dealer City West Commercials has achieved a long-held ambition by opening a smart new service centre in Exeter.
The nine-bay workshop on the Greendale Business Park at Woodbury Salterton offers a glimpse of things to come for operators nationwide – Mercedes-Benz Trucks, in conjunction with its franchised Dealer Network, is developing new facilities and refurbishing established ones to better meet the requirements of heavy vehicles.
Convenient, easily accessible locations are key. Situated just off the A3052, and only three miles from Junction 30 of the M5, City West Commercials’ Exeter branch certainly ticks this box.
Equally important for drivers who can be frustrated by the congested surroundings at some dealerships, is that they have plenty of space in which to manoeuvre and park their vehicles. City West Commercials’ new service centre sits on a 1.8-acre site with extensive hard-standing to three sides, offering ample room for even the longest tractor and trailer combinations.
City West Commercials has decided to dedicate its sales activities to Mercedes-Benz trucks – the Actros, Arocs, Antos, Atego and Econic – as well as FUSO Canter light trucks. The company’s headquarters are in Avonmouth, near Bristol, and it has other branches in Highbridge, Somerset, and Roche, Cornwall.
Dealer Principal Graeson Clarke and his colleagues worked closely with Network Development specialists from Mercedes-Benz Trucks in drawing up the plans. The comprehensively-equipped, drive-through workshop features two 15-metre pits as well as ramps, while the building also incorporates a well-stocked Parts department, a reception with driver rest area and shower, and offices.
Newly-promoted Depot Manager Joe Casley heads a team of six Parts staff and 11 Technicians – two are dedicated to the Mercedes-Benz S24h emergency roadside assistance scheme, while another two are allocated to the Dealer’s Service To You programme, and visit customer premises to undertake maintenance and minor repairs.
Initially, the workshop is open from 6am until 11pm on weekdays, and from 8am until 1pm on Saturdays. However, Graeson said that if demand picks up as anticipated it will move to round-the-clock operation before the end of the year – the addition of a third shift will necessitate the recruitment of a further three Technicians.
“This very modern service centre has been designed with efficiency in mind,” he commented. “It represents the final piece in our branch development jigsaw and leaves us ideally placed to exploit the very significant opportunities for growth that we’ve identified, by meeting and indeed exceeding the demands of truck operators throughout Devon and beyond. This will ensure that customers’ needs are being met – we are here when they need us to be.”
“It also represents a huge leap forward in comparison to our previous facility in Exeter, which we had outgrown,” Graeson continued. “I would therefore like to thank our loyal customers and colleagues for bearing with us as we worked in often challenging circumstances. I know the team are delighted with their new home and I’m equally sure that customers who visit our new branch will agree it was well worth the wait.”
Mark Williams, Mercedes-Benz Trucks Head of Network Development, said: “Our Dealer Network has evolved over many years. We already have, and are also developing, a number of excellent facilities across the UK.
“Ideally located and purpose-built on a really good footprint, City West Commercials’ fantastic new service centre in Exeter is a great example of the kind of truck-focused facility that is going to change the face of our Dealer Network over the months and years to come.”
Happy customers: Marston’s Draymen Daniel O’Riordan and Jake Dinner, delivered trucks to City West Commercials’ previous base in Exeter, for inspections and services.
“We’d have to park up the road sometimes, so this new depot is going to make life a lot easier,” enthused Daniel. “There so much more room in the yard.”
