TEDxExeter’s first Salon to explore cutting edge technology

Leading researchers from Google and Amazon will be sharing the latest developments in artificial intelligence at the first TEDxExeterSalon.

Tickets are due to go on sale next week for the hotly anticipated event in October, which will explore how technology meets the real world.

The Salon follows the sell-out TEDxExeter ideas festival in April. It will bring together speakers from academia, the arts and innovative companies to discuss how technology is transforming our lives in ways that are exhilarating yet often controversial.

They will be sharing insights into how machines are teaching themselves to understand their environment, and how tech can reveal the collective consciousness – or hive mind – of large groups of people.

Speakers will include:

More speakers will be announced soon at www.TEDxExeter.com.

Claire Kennedy, founder and curator of TEDxExeter, said:

“Building on our work over the past seven years creating Exeter’s Festival of Ideas, we’re delighted to be working closely with the team at the Met Office’s Informatics Lab to bring exceptional speakers in the fields of data and tech to share their cutting edge thinking with a wide audience in Exeter and beyond.”

The TEDxExeterSalon is happening over the same weekend as LOST WEEKEND, a new three-day festival of music, art, ideas and technology. The Salon takes place at the Barnfield Theatre on Saturday, October 7, from 9.30am to 1pm. Tickets will include access to music events taking place during the weekend.

There will be simultaneous livestream events at the Exeter Phoenix’s Studio 74 and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum.

Tickets will be released at 1pm on Thursday, July 27, and demand is expected to be high.

TEDxExeter’s annual ideas festival in April was attended by a combined audience of more than 900 people in the Exeter Northcott theatre and Exeter University’s nearby Alumni Auditorium, where the event was streamed live. Thousands more people were watching the live stream at gatherings across the city and in more than 50 countries around the world. Talks from the first six TEDxExeter events have so far been viewed nearly 15 million times. TEDxExeter is a not-for-profit event organised by a team of volunteers and made possible by support from sponsors, including local businesses. Since TEDxExeter started in 2012, eight talks from the event have been chosen to feature on the main TED.com website – a distinction achieved by only 400 talks from independently organised TEDx events around the world.
