New Water Service Provider Set To Make A Splash In The South West

An Exeter College alumnus has launched an independent water retail business for the non-household market, thought to be the first based in the South West since deregulation of the market in April 2017.

Tor Water is a new water retailer for businesses, looking to provide smart water services that will yield a more competitive and efficient service, whilst also supporting community and charity initiatives in the region.

Founded by former Exeter College student Jiro Wilson, Tor Water officially launched its platform in July this year, following the start-up’s move to Exeter Science Park Centre.

Jiro said:

“With years of experience in the utilities and water industries, I was inspired to set up a company that offers an unsurpassed level of customer service at a competitive price and that would try to do things a little differently. The deregulation of the market earlier this year has allowed business customers in the UK to shop around for their water supplier for the first time.

“We have a number of exciting projects underway, including an intelligent forecasting tool that will help businesses to manage water consumption and storage resulting in more efficient use of resources and ultimately cost savings.

Jiro continued:

“We are working on the ground-up research and development of a bespoke CRM platform, with the integration of meteorological, historic and real-time data that will allow us to develop a short-term forecasting capability.

“Having studied and worked in Exeter for most of my life, I know that there are so many great projects, initiatives, and charities here that we would love to support. We want to be successful as a business, but part of our vision is to be a company that is known for doing good things. For me, this is all about creating a legacy; a business that is known for doing outstanding work, supporting the community and that is run by good people.”

Jiro has over 20 years’ experience in the utilities sector, working for big name companies in telecoms, energy, and water, and has based his business model on what he’s learned during this time.

Based at Exeter Science Park, the company currently employs five people, including IT and digital specialists, and will look to recruit as demand for services increases.

The company offers three different tariff options which offer different levels of support, from a basic plan to having a dedicated account manager.

Tor Water was supported during the launch of the business by a team from Exeter City Council’s inward investment initiative, Invest in Exeter, to help establish the business and find office space.

Cllr Rachel Sutton, Lead Councillor for Economy at Exeter City Council said:

“We are so pleased to welcome Tor Water to Exeter and to see an Exeter College business school alumnus launch an exciting and innovative new business in the region. Exeter has so much to offer start-ups in terms of business support and advice, as well as the city being a fantastic place to live and work. With a thriving business community already at the Science Park, we are sure that Tor Water will be a huge success.”
